Should You Upgrade to the New iPhone?

I was at the Apple Store today and had the opportunity to handle both the iPhone 5S and the 5C.  They are both very nice phones!  I was surprised at the quality of the 5C, even with the plastic body it feels like a very high quality device.  The 5S likewise is a top of the line smartphone.  I had the opportunity to test out the “Touch ID” fingerprint reader and it performed flawlessly for me.  So you may be wondering…should I upgrade to one of these new devices?  The answer is…well it depends.

If you currently have an iPhone 4 or 4S and are eligible for an upgrade, you should absolutely consider one of these phones!  That is…if you are still wanting to stay with the Apple ecosystem.  And speaking as someone with experience with both Android, Windows, and iPhone…Apple’s newest iOS 7 is absolutely a step in the right direction and the best mobile OS I have used to date.

However, if you currently have an iPhone 5 like myself…I’d say wait for the next major upgrade.  Both the iPhone 5C and the 5S are amazing devices, but in my testing today I just did not notice that much of a difference between the new devices and my current iPhone 5.  Granted, the fingerprint reader on the 5S is amazing, but if you are not required to use a passcode it’s really not something that you are going to miss.  I just can’t justify the costs to upgrade to this new iPhone.  Yes, I realize that this new 5S has a much faster CPU and graphics processing, but I haven’t yet experienced any lag on my iPhone 5, and I’m not a huge gamer that will be really stressing my current processor.

So in conclusion, the iPhone 5C and 5S are both great devices and I wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone who is eligible for an upgrade.  But if you currently have an iPhone 5 and are considering selling it to pay for one of these new smartphones full price, I’d say hold off and just wait another year for the iPhone 6.
