Review: Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover for iPad mini

I really enjoy using my iPad mini.  In my opinion it’s the perfect size.  I can use it to play games on, watch movies or TV shows, browse the web, and even read books.  The size is just right.  I even find that I can type faster on the mini than I can on the full size iPad because it’s so easy to type with my thumbs.  But occasionally, there are times when I’d like to be able to type a little faster and use the iPad mini almost like a small notebook.  For those times, I bought the Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover for iPad mini.

This is a really great and functional cover, but it’s not without it’s flaws (more on those later).  I am someone with large hands but I found that after some adjustment I was able to type fairly comfortably on this keyboard.  Connecting the keyboard with bluetooth was effortless and once connected it easily reconnects as needed.  There are a number of useful function keys on the keyboard that are…well useful!  The “home” key is in a great location and easy to double-click to open your recently used apps.  The power switch is easy to use and with a mini-usb jack it’s easy to charge when needed.

As I mentioned above, this case is not without it’s flaws.  While I believe Logitech did the best job they could with the small size it’s still not as comfortable to type on as my 11″ Macbook Air.  But I can’t really blame Logitech for this drawback.  Next, the use of the magnets on the hinge is awesome and works identically as Apple’s own “smart” cover, however Logitech neglected to put any magnets on the other side to keep the case closed.  It can easily just flop open if you aren’t paying attention.  Finally my biggest complaint is that there is no way to check the battery level on the keyboard cover.  So you just have to guess how much charge is remaining until one day you are left in the lurch.

Despite the few negatives above I still believe this is one of the best bluetooth keyboards available for the iPad mini.  If you think you’d like to pick one up you can find it here at Amazon.  It’s also worth noting that Logitech also makes a full size version for Apple’s larger iPads.
